Maquillage 101

To someone who's just been introduced to makeup, the question that always first comes to mind is "which foundation to choose?".

Remember my previous post about skin types? If you figured out what kind of skin you have, choosing the right foundation for you will be a breeze!

These are my recommendations when choosing foundation depending on your skin type:

Normal skin

If you've been blessed to have a normal skin type, don't ever assume that you can buy ANY kind of foundation there is in the market. Seriously, there are still things you have to consider before heading to the counter. Your very best guide to choosing the right foundation for you will have to be, READ THE LABEL. You have to look for the phrase: "For dry to normal skin" and the word "non-comedogenic", meaning it will not clog your pores.

Oily Skin
For individuals with oily skin, look for a foundation that is water-based. These will be in liquid form, will show that it gives flawless coverage of the face, with the downside of lasting only a maximum of about 4 hours. But, you don't have to fret if your foundation will slowly lose its staying power! All you have to do is to apply loose powder after you apply your water-based foundation to help your foundation last longer, and also to absorb excess oil.

Again, remember to choose one which is "non-comedogenic", because you wouldn't want your pores clogged, and worsen your acne condition! Look for the key word "oil-control".

Tip: Applying foundation with your fingers can transfer dirt and oil onto your skin. Always apply foundation using a clean sponge.

Sensitive Skin
If you have dry or sensitive skin, I recommend "cream-based" foundation, because this kind of foundation has moisturizing benefits.

Many women have sensitive skin --often experience dryness and redness due to the fact that their skin is thinner and more delicate than those with normal skin type. In order for you to keep your skin smooth and clear, you may want to use products that are "fragrance-free", "hypoallergenic" and of course, "non-comedogenic".

And, I also would suggest using a foundation that is powder in form. Why? because it's lighter, more delicate, and will help protect your skin from the sun and other pollutants without clogging your pores.

Combination Skin
If it isn't hard enough to have this kind of skin type, what more finding the right foundation for you? I once used to have this skin type, and mind you--looking for the right foundation was really a nightmare!

Note: Since combination skin type tends to be oily on some parts and dry on others, you might want to exfoliate every day.

Remember that combination skin usually is oily on the T-Zone and dry patches around the nose and mouth, so you should moisturize. Look for foundations that come in a "liquid-to-powder" or "cream-to-powder" form, and should also be "oil-free".

Now, remember...before buying any product --ALWAYS TEST!

When testing the foundation, test along your jawline, not your wrist. Admit it, you usually test foundation on your wrist. Please keep in mind that your facial skin is not the same as the skin on your wrist. So try it on where it needs to go.

Note: It is almost impossible to find an exact matching foundation to your skin. Sometimes mixing foundations works best!

So, there you go! You are now armed with information when choosing the right foundation for your skin. Remember, it's not about the price or the brand--it's about what it will do to you and to your skin!
